La catedral del mar / Cathedral of the Sea
It is the 14th century. The city of Barcelona finds itself at the peak of its prosperity. It has expanded towards Ribera, a humble district of fishermen, whose inhabitants decide to build, with the money of some and the effort of others, the greatest Marian shrine ever known: Santa María del Mar.
The construction of the church develops parallel to the eventful chronicle of Arnau’s life, a serf, who escapes from the abuses of his feudal lord and finds refuge in Barcelona, where he becomes a citizen and a free man. Young Arnau works as a stable boy, stevedore, soldier and money changer. A strenuous life, always under the shelter of the Cathedral of the Sea, that will deliver him from the misery of a fugitive and bring him grandeur and wealth. But this new privileged status will provoke the envy of his peers who will work out an evil scheme to put him in the hands of the Inquisition…
The narrative of The Cathedral of the Sea interweaves loyalty and revenge, treason and love, war and plague in a world marked by religious intolerance, ambition to make material gains and social segregation. All this makes it not only a truly enthralling novel but also a most fascinating and ambitious recreation of the upsides and downsides of the feudal times.
